PSHE Curriculum
At Quarry Mount Primary School, we see Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) as being at the centre of all that we do. Through our curriculum, our school environment and our school ethos, we promote pupils’ self- esteem and emotional well-being and help them to form and maintain worthwhile and satisfying relationships, based on respect for themselves and for others, at home, at school, at work and in the community.
We encourage children to demonstrate and apply the British Values of: Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual Respect, Rule of Law and Liberty to their daily life.
We deliver a PHSE curriculum that incorporates the understanding of RSE and as a result our children will know how to be safe and to understand healthy relationships and consent both now and in their future lives.
PSHE is taught for 1 hour weekly in every class. This enables staff to ensure the full coverage of PHSE is taught in each year group. Each child has their own PHSE book to evidence their work as they progress through school. Displays across school incorporating PHSE, British Values and SMSC reinforce the PHSE curriculum enabling children to make links. PHSE is an important part of school assemblies where children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured.
PHSE is taught in EYFS according to curriculum guidance for the foundation stage. The provision is planned to ensure development in Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) daily. In provision, children will explore the ideas of relationships, feelings, appropriate behaviours, self- confidence, self- awareness, rules, routines and empathy.
There is a clear and comprehensive RSE scheme of work within PHSE in line with the new recommendations of teaching RSE in National Curriculum (Feb 2019). The teaching and learning of RSE is planned explicitly within the year group. Parents are informed of the content of the RSE programme of work at a year group meeting, with further support and clarification given if required.
For KS1 and KS2, we follow a clear and comprehensive scheme of work called ‘You, Me and PHSE’. Each topic in the scheme incorporates activities to establish the starting point of learners and assess progress. The topics included are:
We also provide experiences and enrichment opportunities, including:
