Geography at Quarry Mount Primary School

The intention of the Geography Curriculum at Quarry Mount Primary School is to inspire children's curiosity and interest to explore the world that we live in and its people. This feeds into our whole school values of PROUD. As a rich, multicultural city school, where many of our children have come from locations around the world, we intend for our children to become knowledgeable about their local area, the UK and locations around the world, as well as celebrating their home countries. We aim for children to agin a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, their place in it and responsibility to care for it. We intend to equip children with geographical skills to develop their knowledge through studying places, people and natural and human environments. This seeks to deepen the understanding of the Earth's human and physical forms and processes.
Our curriculum is designed to provide our children with the subject specific language they need to describe, question and discuss the world, as well as their place in it.

Our curriculum equips pupils with:

  • locational and place knowledge of continents, oceans, countries and cities of interest using maps, globes and atlases
  • knowledge of key aspects of human and physical geography
  • the ability to identify the position and significance of key lines of latitude and longitude
  • knowledge of how to use points of a compass and grid references
  • how to use fieldwork to observe, measure, record and present the human and physical features in the local area

We aim to produce well- rounded individuals by providing our children with opportunities to expand their cultural capital and experiences of the world.
