Religious EducatioN
Religious Education (RE) Curriculum
At Quarry Mount, our aim is to provide a Religious Education (RE) curriculum that allows every child to flourish, develop respect for others, and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse world around them.
The National Curriculum and our agreed syllabus *Believing and Belonging* ensure that all pupils:
- explore a range of religions and worldviews, developing knowledge of beliefs, values and traditions
- learn how religious beliefs and practices shape life and behaviour
- reflect on their own ideas, values and experiences in light of what they study
- ask and answer questions of meaning, purpose and morality
- show respect, empathy and tolerance towards others in a diverse society
Teaching and Learning in RE
Pupils will be taught to develop their understanding of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism and non-religious worldviews, building on prior knowledge as they move through school. They will be encouraged to think critically, ask thoughtful questions and make connections across faiths and cultures.
Teachers will plan a wide range of activities that give children opportunities to:
- listen to stories, handle artefacts and explore sacred texts
- learn about and celebrate religious festivals and traditions
- visit places of worship and meet visitors from different faith communities
- take part in role-play, drama, art and music linked to RE themes
- record their reflections through writing, discussion and creative outcomes
- compare different religious and non-religious worldviews
- consider their own values and beliefs in relation to those they study
Progression and Assessment
RE is taught weekly, with lessons building skills step by step. Work is recorded in RE books (KS1/KS2) and can take many forms, including writing, artwork and photographs. Teachers assess progress against clear expectations at the end of each key stage, ensuring children develop secure knowledge and understanding over time.
To check learning is effective, we regularly carry out book looks to ensure children’s work shows progression, creativity, and high standards. Planning is reviewed to make sure lessons are well resourced, differentiated and include key vocabulary. We also gather pupil voice through questionnaires and discussions so that children can share their experiences of RE, talk confidently about what they have learned, and help shape the subject for the future.
The Impact of RE
Through our RE curriculum, children at Quarry Mount will:
- gain knowledge and understanding of a variety of religions and beliefs
- develop a rich religious vocabulary and understanding of symbolism
- feel safe to share their own views and listen to others in a respectful way
- explore meaningful questions about life, values and identity
- demonstrate tolerance, empathy and respect that extends beyond school into their community and wider world
We also monitor the impact of RE through pupil voice, book looks, displays and classroom visits, ensuring that children’s work reflects creativity, engagement, and progression.
We also want our pupils to take home what they learn in RE, to share their ideas and reflections with their families and to develop respect for different beliefs both inside and outside school.
