Music
At Quarry Mount we believe that Music and the Arts are important for every child's development. We are constantly striving to provide children with opportunities to develop a real passion for music. Throughout the year, we provide opportunities to for pupils experience live music performances and participate in performing for others.
Curriculum

Each week, each class is taught a stand-alone music lesson. Artforms specialists teach our children a range of instruments and throughout their time at Quarry Mount, each child has the opportunity to play a range of tuned and untuned instruments in an ensemble.
Children also learn how to compose music and listen to different genres of music on a regular basis.
In Reception, music is embedded into everyday routines. Each week, children learn a new nursery rhyme and songs are used to embed everyday instructions. Reception also experience singing with an instrument as one of our Artforms teachers, Mr Fearnley, delivers a weekly music lesson.
In Year 1, children are taught to play a range of percussion instruments. During these lessons, listening skills are developed as children learn how to play and stop at the correct time. They also learn about resting position, ready position and playing position. Year 1 also explore a range of music genres and explore the music they are listening to with movement.

In Year 2, the skills they learned in Year 1 are developed further. They expand their instruments by learning how to play chime bars in unison. They also begin to compose small pieces of music while continuing to expand their music knowledge with a range of vocabulary and listening to a wider range of music genres.

In Year 3, children learn their first tuned instrument, the recorder! They learn this instrument with Miss Freitas and during these lessons, they are also introduced to musical notation. Throughout the year, they are taught to read music and perform at the end of the year to an audience.
In Year 4, children develop their composition, playing and listening skills further with Charanga. They also have two terms of learning the Steel Pans with Natalie, another fantastic member of the Artforms team.
In Year 5, the children develop their skills with woodwind instruments by learning another instrument in the recorder family, the clarinet. They also learn this instrument with Miss Freitas who continues their development of understanding musical notation and playing in an ensemble.
In Year 6, children learn to compose with a term with Mr Fearnley. They also develop a range of listening skills throughout the year. In addition, Year 6 develop their playing of Steel Pans by having a term of tuition from Natalie.
Singing Assemblies
Mrs Davis delivers a weekly Singing Assembly where we learn to sing together, including harmonies! Mrs Davis is always open to new suggestions for songs during these assemblies and the children love this time of the week.
Small Group Tuition
In years 4, 5 and 6, children have the opportunity to learn an instrument in a small group. This is not during class time and is an extra-curricular activity. Currently, children are learning guitar and violin in our small group lessons.
Rock Steady

We have just introduced the fantastic Rock Steady into our school. This is a program that allows children to be part of a band. During these sessions, children have the opportunity to play electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, keyboard or singing. Through this program, children also get to perform to others. We are so excited to see what our rock bands perform!

Choir
Mrs Davis runs a weekly choir for children to have the opportunity to sing as part of an ensemble. We performed a fantastic 'Candlelight Carols' in December 2025 and we are currently beginning to learn songs for our next performance. Watch this space for more information!

Live Music
Recently, the wonderful Back Chat Brass came in to perform for us. We helped them to compose a funny song and they played some fantastic songs, including the hit 'Golden' from lots of our children's favourite film!
